This week we have the pleasure of featuring Jordan Doré, owner of Toitures Joël.

This week we have the pleasure of featuring Jordan Doré, owner of Toitures Joël. "I started working on roofs at the age of 16 during summers when school would end. I did that for nine years until I graduated from Concordia University in Montreal with a bachelor’s degree in commerce. After university, I moved to Toronto for a year and worked for a roofing company in Etobicoke." This is where his story begins.

Doman: What is the history of your company?

Jordan Doré: I purchased this company about two years ago although it had been in existence for 19 years. A few months after moving back to Montreal, I met a man who was getting ready to retire and I bought his company. The crazy part of this story is that this man, whom I had hired as a consultant, passed away 10 days after we signed the deal. The transition period was a wild adventure, but we managed to get through it and now sales are booming. We specialize in residential and commercial roofing, and currently employ 15 to 20 employees. We service the Greater Montreal area.

What services do you offer?

We work with independent designers. We have found that our best approach is to focus on what we are good at, that is roofing, and we hire professionals for everything else. It’s more profitable for us in the long run to be experts in one craft rather than simply being good in many.

Can you tell us about one of your favourite projects and why?

My favourite project with this company has to be the monster roof replacement we did with 700 bundles of BP asphalt shingles. The roof was only 11 years old, but the shingles never stuck properly. Since it is located between a corn field and a river, the condominium building is exposed to very high winds on a regular basis. They would lose chunks of their roofs during every wind storm, so they needed good quality shingles. We installed BP Everest 42 type shingles and solved their problem.

Why do you work with . . .?

We mainly use BP Canada products on our shingle roofs because of the quality and the easy availability of these products in Montreal. We used to install a different roofing product but we encountered many problems with shingles that would blow off in the wind. That issue was costing us lots of money in service calls, so we made the switch to BP shingles. Since we install approximately 12,000 to 14,000 bundles annually, changing from one supplier to another is a big deal. We haven’t had any issues with the new BP shingles, so we are satisfied with our decision.

What warranty do you offer on your work or the products?

We offer a basic 10-year warranty on our work.

How do you approach each project?

I usually sit back and listen to what the client wants and needs, and then I make my suggestions based on the information received.

What trends do see in the future for your industry?

We’re hoping to get into solar roofs. The rough winters in Canada, and especially here in Quebec, is obviously a roadblock for the moment, but once that is figured out. I’m sure it will become a trend in the near future.

How do you find out about new products?

I would say mostly online through posts on social media. The sales reps also give us some insight on different products sometimes.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I’ve ever been given about running my business is that if you still want to be in business in 20 years, you need to provide great service and quality work.
